The aim of this study was to examine fatherhood in the context of maternal postpartum depression, during a parent-baby brief psychotherapy, especially with regard to experience of the fatherhood (desire of having the baby, feelings and representations concerning fatherhood, the wife as a mother and his own father) and the practice of fatherhood (support to the mother, paternal function, paternal involvement). The study involved two phases: an initial evaluation, comprising several interviews with father and mother in the second semester of the baby's life; and a parent-baby brief psychotherapy, which lasted a period of approximately one semester. Two families, with a baby aged between 7 and 8 months, a mothers (44 and 37 years), with symptoms of depression, and a fathers (38 and 44 years) took part in this study. As far as the experience of fatherhood is concerning, the results indicated that, in both cases, fatherhood was evaluated in a quite ambivalent way. The satisfaction experienced by fathers was related to their feelings of being good fathers, emotionally close to the babies and with great participation in their lives. However, both fathers also felt negatively affected by their wives’ depressive symptoms. As to the practice of fatherhood, it was found that fathers were very present and active in terms of paternal behaviors (taking care of the children, helping the wife in domestic tasks), but very absent in terms of paternal functions, with difficulty in supporting the mothers emotionally, as well as in the determination of appropriate limits to the children. Although the results have indicated that father's involvement in practical tasks in the puerperal period is important in order to reduce the mother's overload and to protect her emotional health, this seemed not to be enough. It would be also important that the father be connected to mother's emotional needs and share the intense emotional load of this period with her. The present work also evidenced a kind of feedback between father's and mother’s emotional difficulties, that justifies the indication of joint psychotherapies in the context of maternal postpartum depression.en
