Numerical study of natural convection on a heated elliptical fin intruded into a cavity
Abstract in Portuguese (Brasil)

The present study shows a numerical study of laminar flow inside finned square cavity under natural convection effect. The flow is assumed to be two-dimensional, laminar, incompressible and permanent. The objective is to obtain the optimum fin geometry in order to maximize heat transfer between the fluid flowing within the cavity and heated elliptical fin inserted in the center of the bottom surface. It is fixed the ratio of the cavity’s external dimensions (H / L) = 1 and varying the fin aspect ratio, i.e., the ratio between the vertical and horizontal fin semi-axes (a / b). The area of the fin is also fixed. Was studied the fin’s area to 0.1%; 1%; 5%; 10%; 20%; 30%; 40% and 50% of the total cavity’s area, which is kept fixed. The fluid flowing inside the cavity has the thermophysical properties of the air for Prandtl number Pr = 0.71. The buoyancy forces encountered in the flow are performed through the use of the Rayleigh number, 𝑅𝑎𝐻=106. In order to solve the proposed problem, the commercial software Fluent® based on finite volume method (FVM) was used to solve mass, momentum and energy equations, coupling the pressure and velocity by the use of the SIMPLEC method and the spatial discretization, using first order upwind scheme. The results show the optimized geometry for each area fraction (Φ). The best geometry, i.e., the one with have the best average Nusselt number, is one whose fin aspect ratio is 1.1 with the smaller area fraction studied, Φ = 0.001; and obtained an increased heat transfer, between the fin and the fluid, of 22.9% when compared with the worse geometry fin with the same area fraction. The elliptical fin may also exhibit performance gains of approximately 13,3% compared with rectangular fin with ɸ = 0:05 in the same thermal conditions. ...
