Analysis of the effect of high temperature brakings (fade) on friction obtained in brake pads
Abstract in Portuguese (Brasil)
Abstract
This study aims to verify if the changes caused by high temperatures (fade) on material’s tribological performance (friction and wear) affect the total volume of vehicular brake pads or just a thin surface layer of the rubbed area. Therefore, steps composed of a series of braking were performed in order to compare the friction coefficient that occur after the fade to the bedding-in (virgin material behavior). These brakings were performed on the tribometer of the Laboratory of Tribology of UFRG ...
These brakings were performed on the tribometer of the Laboratory of Tribology of UFRGS, using two different semi-metalic (SM) brake pads. Two methods were employed to check the influence of the fade in friction material: graphical analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Both methods showed similar results. It was found a recovery of nearly 100% for the first SM material after removal (wear and machining) of material from the sample’s surface, while for the second SM material recovery was of 96%, according to ANOVA. Thus, it was proved that the fade is material-dependent. ...
