O Programa de Modernização de Bibliotecas Públicas é uma parceria do Governo Federal e dos estados brasileiros, através do Sistema Nacional de Bibliotecas Públicas. No Rio Grande do Sul, ele foi implantado pela Secretaria de Estado da Cultura e o Sistema de Bibliotecas Públicas do Rio Grande do Sul. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar as mudanças ocorridas em duas bibliotecas municipais do estado, a biblioteca Dr. Demétrio Niederauer, em Caxias do Sul, e a biblioteca José Antônio Lutzenberger, em Picada Café, ambas contempladas no Programa. Foram feitas visitas às duas bibliotecas e foram entrevistados os bibliotecários e uma amostra de seus usuários. Os resultados corroboram a importância de programas de melhoria das condições das unidades de informação do país e mostram que adequações às realidades dos municípios precisam ser consideradas para um maior aproveitamento dos recursos destinados. ...

The Programa de Modernização de Bibliotecas Públicas, a program designed to improve Brazilian public libraries, was a partnership between the Federal Government and the states within Brazil, acting through the Sistema Nacional de Bibliotecas Públicas. In Rio Grande do Sul, it was deployed by the Secretaria de Estado da Cultura and the Sistema de Bibliotecas Públicas do Rio Grande do Sul. The aim of this study was to analyze the changes in two public libraries both included in the Program; they were Dr. Demetrio Niederauer Library in Caxias do Sul and José Antônio Lutzenberger Library in Picada Café. Both libraries were visited and their librarians, as well as, a sample of their users were interviewed. The results confirm the importance of programs to improve the conditions of the libraries in the country and show that adjustments to the realities of each county need to be considered for a better use of allocated resources. ...
