The advance of the feminist theories of International Relations started in the late 1980s, together with the post-positivist movement of criticism towards the mainstream of the discipline. Since then, the feminist body of work has been growing, and has shown itself to be very dynamic. This paper analyzes the theoretical and methodological work of feminists, seeking to identify the ontological, epistemological end methodological bases of the feminist school of IR, and to analyze the way in which these issues present themselves in their empirical work. The paper argues that the theoretical position of feminists is more radical than it appears to be at first sight, since they question the dichotomous bases of the discipline, as in the public/private and domestic/international split, revealing their masculine bias. Furthermore, feminist theoretical positions problematize the discipline’s use of quantitative methods, asserting that they tend to mask power relations that are both private and public, especially when it comes to the experience of marginalized groups. To deal with these questions, feminist have been turning to methods that are relatively new to IR, such as ethnography, interviews, narrative, and discourse analysis. ...
