Cet article présente les oeuvres de Machado et de Rosa comme deux manières complémentaires de dépassement du romantisme sentimental qui afflige la culture brésilienne aux 19e et 20e siècles. Par ce biais, on voit surgir une certaine continuité entre les deux auteurs : c’est le principe de la compensation qui nous fait passer de l’ironie prosaïque de Machado à l’intensité intime de G. Rosa, et de la volubilité frivole à une profondeur contemplative ou tragique jusque-là inconnue dans la littérat ...
