The skin is a large organ which acts as an anatomical and physiological barrier between the organism and the environment. Because of its easy visualization, skin cancer is commonly seen in small animal practice. Nowadays, cancer has been considered the major cause of death in dogs and cats. The high prevalence of malignant diseases in these species is likely to be related to the higher longevity of these animals as well as related to the growth of pet population. Studies suggest that skin cancer is the most diagnosed, representing approximately 30% of tumors in dogs and 20% in cats. The mast cell tumor is the most commonly diagnosed tumor in canines, with prevalence between 11-15% of all skin tumors. Despite of its high incidence, the etiopathogenesis of mast cell tumor is not complete elucidated. Mast cell tumor has variable behavior, so it can exhibit a benign or malign pattern which could cause systemic diseases and/or lead to death. Because of its variable behavior, it is difficult to find an appropriate therapeutic approach. However, it is possible to use concomitantly more than one of the therapies’ options such as neoadjuvant and adjuvant therapy. The diagnosis of the disease should be confirmed by cytology or histopathology of cutaneous mast cell tumor. In addition, the status of the patient should be followed by haemathological and biochemical tests as well as abdominal ultrasound and thoracic radiography. These complementary tests are fundamentally important for tumor staging because it will give a direction for the best therapy's choice. The main therapeutic modalities of neoplasia are surgical excision, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, cryosurgery and, most recently, tyrosine kinase inhibitors. The choice of the type of treatment mostly depends on prognostic factors, which are mainly provided by histological classification and tumor staging. This paper work reviews available treatments to cutaneous mast cell tumor in canines, associating them with survival rate demonstrated in scientific studies. Moreover, this paper work shows the particularities of each therapeutic modality, describing them in details, as well as their criteria for election. ...
