Narrar o passado, projetar o futuro : Sílvio Romero e a experiência historiográfica oitocentista

Abstract

A dissertação versa sobre a escrita da história em Sílvio Romero, tendo por objetivo analisar sua inserção em uma experiência historiográfica oitocentista. Tentou-se reconstituir algumas bases epistemológicas e temáticas que configurariam um espaço de trabalho obrigatório, formado dentro de uma ordem imperial, com o qual Romero dialoga. A partir de uma seleção de seus textos, produzidos entre as décadas de 1870 e 1890, procurou-se perceber as linhas de continuidade e as rupturas por ele instauradas, tanto no nível da formalização da prática historiográfica e do perfil do historiador, como na elaboração de uma identidade narrativa para a nação. Remodelando alguns preceitos ritualísticos da escrita da história (a afetividade, a cientificidade e a utilidade) e conferindo um outro sentido à rede interpretativa herdada pela tradição imperial, Romero pôde formular uma releitura do passado nacional, concentrando nos conceitos de “povo” e “mestiço” uma nova carga semântica, em conformidade com as expectativas que visava efetivar.

The objective of this work is to analyze how the national historian’s authorial figure was established in the historiographical practice of the 19th century. Based on Foucault’s considerations on coercion mechanisms in generating discourses, among which can be pointed out the restriction of the enunciating subjects in the writing ritualization, the purpose is to delimitate the characteristic gestures that legitimated and outlined the national historian’s profile. Three basic characteristics that qualified the historiographical production are highlighted here: the patriotic sincerity, the scientificity and the pragmatic dimension of the product. These characteristics reveal the doubles in relation to which the historian’s profile was outlined: the poet, the naturalist traveler and the publicist-strategist.
