A teoria da memória de Henri Bergson

Abstract

Este Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso analisa a teoria da memória em Henri Bergson, situando a em seu contexto histórico e filosófico. A pesquisa inicia-se com a obra Ensaio sobre os Dados Imediatos da Consciência (1889), na qual o autor critica as concepções quantitativas do tempo e desenvolve a noção de duração real, entendida como tempo vivido, contínuo e indivisível. Em seguida, o estudo se volta para Matéria e Memória (1896), obra em que Bergson articula as noções de corpo e espírito, percepção e memória, formulando sua teoria mais influente sobre o tema. A análise dos conceitos de matéria, imagem, percepção e consciência permitiu compreender a memória como uma relação dinâmica entre corpo e espírito, representada, em síntese, pela figura filosófica do cone da memória. A partir dessa figura, torna-se possível visualizar o mecanismo filosófico que integra a memória-hábito e a memória pura, convergindo-as em um ponto que simboliza o campo da experiência e da ação. Constatou-se, assim, que a memória desempenha um papel central na proposta bergsoniana de superação do dualismo, além de apontar para desdobramentos posteriores de sua filosofia, especialmente no estudo da essência vital. Por fim, o trabalho evidencia a atualidade do pensamento bergsoniano, cuja concepção de tempo vivido encontra ressonância em debates contemporâneos nas ciências, na história oral, na psicologia e nos estudos da memória, ressaltando sua relevância multidisciplinar e interpretativa.

This Final Paper analyzes Henri Bergson’s theory of memory, situating it within its historical and philosophical context. The research begins with the work Time and Free Will: An Essay on the Immediate Data of Consciousness (1889), in which the author criticizes quantitative conceptions of time and develops the notion of real duration, understood as lived time continuous and indivisible. The study then turns to Matter and Memory (1896), a work in which Bergson articulates the notions of body and spirit, perception and memory, formulating his most influential theory on the subject. The analysis of the concepts of matter, image, perception and consciousness made it possible to understand memory as a dynamic relationship between body and spirit, represented, in summary, by the philosophical figure of the cone of memory. Through this figure, one can visualize the philosophical mechanism that integrates habit-memory and pure memory, bringing them together at a point that symbolizes the field of experience and action. It was thus found that memory plays a central role in Bergson’s proposal for overcoming dualism, in addition to pointing to later developments in his philosophy, especially in the study of vital essence. Finally, the thesis highlights the contemporary relevance of Bergsonian thought, whose conception of lived time resonates with current debates in the sciences, oral history, psychology and memory studies, underscoring its multidisciplinary and interpretative significance.
